Deals products ended by Facebook
2011-08-30
Facebook is finishing the daily "Deals" business after 4 months of testing, a move that is about to take pressure off sector figures GroupOn and LivingSocial. According to a statement by Facebook, "After testing Deals for 4 months, we've made a decision to end our Deals product in the approaching weeks. We've learned plenty from our test and we'll continue to guage how it's possible to serve local businesses." Facebook's exit from the web group purchasing business means industry frontrunner GroupOn has one less rival as they make preparations for a preliminary public offering of $750 million. "It is surprising that Facebook stopped their deals product after only 4 months," announced Vinicius Vacanti, founder of Yipit.com, which aggregates daily deals and tracks the industry.
