 | Possibly illegal voice and ADSL combo by Telkom2011-08-02

Telkom's requirement on bundling its ADSL information service with a mandatory voice service could mean the company is acting in a fashion that transgresses South Africa's new Customer Protection Act.
That is according to Net Service Providers' organisation of SA ( ISPA ) CEO, Ant Brooks. Brooks expounded that section thirteen ( one ) of the CPA has clear prescriptions against bundling services and goods in a way that forces customers to go into agreements or transactions they don't need as a condition of purchasing a certain service or product. "The Act sees such practices as a limitation on the consumer's right to pick providers for each service. According to the Act, mandatory bundling of services is prohibited unless the provider can prove that it offers business benefits and convenience to the customer that outweigh the flaws of limiting choice," ISPA declared in a press statement. Telkom's ADSL lines aren't available in 'naked' DSL options, though one can purchase a voice service without DSL.
